Introduction
PT Halmahera Persada Lygend is a nickel processing company based in Malaysia, specialising in mining operations and mineral resource development. The company produces nickel products for the global supply chain, serving markets that require transparency in environmental and social governance practices.
HPL required a 2022 Sustainability Update Report that documented environmental, social, and governance performance across its operations. A key requirement was bilingual presentation. The report needed to accommodate side-by-side English and Simplified Chinese text for international investors and local communities. This dual-language format created specific design and production challenges.
Walk Production took on the full design scope, from sustainability report conceptualisation through to bilingual layout execution and final delivery. The project translated complex mining operations data into a transparent and accessible publication for a diverse stakeholder audience.
Our Solutions
Sustainability theme and conceptual framework
The design concept drew on environmental stewardship as its central motif. Soft teal and green tones were selected to signal the company’s commitment to ecological responsibility. These colour choices maintained the professional tone expected of industrial sector ESG publications. They also created a distinct visual identity that separated this report from standard corporate documentation.
A central ESG framework infographic was developed to map HPL’s commitments across environmental, social, and governance pillars. This visual anchor appeared early in the report and served as a reference point throughout. It helped readers understand how individual initiatives connect to the broader sustainability strategy. Supporting graphics reinforced key data points within each ESG category.
Bilingual layout and visual design
Designing for two languages simultaneously presents specific technical challenges. We created a side-by-side grid system that places English and Simplified Chinese text in parallel columns. This allows readers to follow content in their preferred language without flipping between sections or losing context. The parallel structure also supports easier cross-referencing between language versions.
The layout was calibrated to account for text expansion differences between the two languages. Typography choices and line spacing were tested across multiple content types, from narrative passages to data tables. Column ratios were adjusted to maintain clean alignment and consistent readability. Each spread was reviewed to confirm that neither language version appeared crowded or unbalanced.
Project delivery and quality assurance
Bilingual publications require additional quality assurance steps beyond standard report production. Our project management workflow included separate review cycles for each language version. Cross-checks verified that translated content aligned correctly with corresponding visual elements. Data points were confirmed against source materials in both language versions to prevent discrepancies.
On-site photography from HPL’s operations, including processing facilities, environmental rehabilitation areas, and community engagement activities, was curated and colour-corrected. This maintained visual consistency across the report. The imagery gave stakeholders authentic visuals that supported the narrative of responsible operations and community involvement.
The Results
The completed sustainability update report gave HPL a professional bilingual document that addresses both English-speaking institutional investors and Chinese-speaking stakeholders. The side-by-side format received positive feedback for its readability and clean presentation. The report functions as both a disclosure document and a communication tool for stakeholder engagement.
Data-driven infographics and on-site imagery work together to reinforce HPL’s position as a responsible operator. The report provides stakeholders with a tangible record of the company’s sustainability progress and ongoing commitments. It serves as a reference document for future reporting cycles.

Related Questions
What is a sustainability update report?
A sustainability update report is a periodic publication that provides stakeholders with progress updates on a company’s ESG performance. Unlike a full sustainability report, an update focuses on key developments and metrics rather than comprehensive year-end disclosure. It is typically published between full annual reports.
How does bilingual layout design work for corporate reports?
Bilingual layout uses parallel text columns or alternate page arrangements to present content in two languages simultaneously. The grid system accounts for differences in text length and character density between languages. This maintains visual balance throughout the document and allows readers to reference both versions easily.
What is an ESG framework infographic?
An ESG framework infographic visually maps a company’s environmental, social, and governance commitments and how they interconnect. It gives readers a structured overview of the sustainability strategy before they encounter detailed metrics. This type of graphic helps stakeholders quickly understand the scope of a company’s ESG approach.
Does Walk Production design reports in Chinese and English?
Yes. Walk Production designs bilingual and multilingual publications, including English paired with Simplified Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia, and Bahasa Indonesia. The typographic approach accommodates character-based and Latin scripts within unified layouts. Each language version is reviewed independently for readability and accuracy.
What ESG standards do sustainability reports typically follow?
Sustainability reports commonly follow frameworks such as GRI Standards, ISSB, TCFD, and local regulatory requirements like Bursa Malaysia’s sustainability reporting guidelines. The choice depends on the company’s listing jurisdiction, industry sector, and the expectations of its primary stakeholder groups, all addressed through our ESG report design practice.
